A Hymn Devotional

Joyful, joyful we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, Opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day!

All thy works with joy surround thee, Earth and heav'n reflect thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around thee, Center of unbroken praise;
Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flowery meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird and flowing fountain, Call us to rejoice in thee.

Once when Jesus was traveling near Jerusalem, his followers were getting a little carried away with their boisterous singing and shouting and praising. When asked to calm them, Jesus said "If they were silent, the rocks and mountains would sing out." In fact, they do. The whole of creation is a testament to the majesty and grandeur of God. It is a rollicking celebration, a vast, expansive reflection of the beauty, power and love of our benevolent God. From the tiniest microbes to the deepest galaxies, Godís creation is an overwhelming, unfathomable gift. What a blessing it is to be a very small part of it.

And yet, as great and inconceivable is the gift of Godís miraculous creation, it is second to an even greater gift. For you see, God so loved his creation and his children that he gave an even more amazing gift: the gift of himself through his son, Jesus Christ. And with that gift came hope, compassion, strength, and eternal life. Eternal. As boundless as Godís creation, and as timeless as Godís love, so shall our lives with him be without an end.

Why does God give us these things? Because He loves us. Why does He love us? Because we are his own. We are his children, and like the limitless love we have for our own precious children, God loves us that much, and infinitely more.

Grateful. Grateful we thank thee.
Humble. Humble we worship thee.
Joyful. Joyful we adore thee.

Dear Father,

We can not thank you in any way that comes close to expressing the overwhelming gratitude that we have for your gifts, especially the gift of your son, Jesus Christ. Our words and thoughts are limited and your creation and love is not. But we thank you, Lord, and commit our lives to you. Keep us mindful in our day-to-day lives that we live in an amazing wonderland, infinite in its power, creativity, majesty and holy design.

Amen.

And now let the celebration continue...

Mortals join the mighty chorus, Which the morning stars began;
Father love is reigning o'er us, Brother love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward, Victors in the midst of strife;
Joyful music leads us sunward In the triumph song of life.
