Devotional for November 17
Faith Of Our Fathers
Author: Frederick W. Faber
Scripture: Hebrews 11:1, 3
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
Faith of our fathers, living still,
In spite of dungeon, fire and sword;
O how our hearts beat high with joy
Whenever we hear that glorious Word!
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death.
Faith of our fathers, we will strive
To win all nations unto Thee;
And through the truth that comes from God,
We all shall then be truly free.
Faith of our fathers, we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife;
And preach Thee, too, as love knows how
By kindly words and virtuous life.
When our faith falters as it sometimes does, we find comfort in Hebrews 11. We learn about the great and undying faith of our forefathers. They had trials and tribulations; but they held to their faith and fought the good fight. So we need also to keep the faith of our fathers, holy faith! God wants us to have faith in Him, trust His holy word and share it with others.
